$26,5 M additional investment of the Government of Québec for the implementation of the Mental Health Action Plan 2015-2020

The Réseau de recherche sur le suicide et les troubles associés (RQSHA) applauds the recent announcement of $26.5M in additional investments by the government of Québec to accelerate the Action Plan for Mental Health 2015-2020.  The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Gaétan Barrette, announced these investment on April 28th.  The funding aims to consolidate the community support teams for adults and youth suffering from serious mental illness.

According to the Government of Québec press release (translation by the RQSHA):

About 5 560 additional people suffering from serious mental illness, like schizophrenia, will benefit from proximity services in their homes or life environment.  The funding will be distributed this way:
  • $15 M to put in place 21 new teams offering sustained follow-up or support.
  • $10 M to develop 15 support teams for early intervention for first psychotic episodes in youth.
  • $1 M to increase general social services in the facilities of the network to strengthen the crisis response help centre.
  • $500 000 for the "Centre national d'excellence en santé mentale" (CNESM), dedicated to the reinstatement of people suffering from serious mental disease in the community.  This amount will support the teams mentionned above to develop better practices in mental health.
